LOSS OF A GREAT ONE
Trumpeter extraordinaire Freddy Hubbard has died at age 70 as the result of complications from a heart attack he suffered last month. Hubbard had a very soulful and smooth playing style which had great influence on other trumpet players as well as jazz, bebop, and other music forms in general. He was not an "acrobat" like Maynard Ferguson nor a pop sensation the likes of Herb Alpert, Doc Severinson, or Chuck Mangione. All those guys were great trumpet players, too, but Hubbard was the one I really listened to a lot back in the day when I was playing.
